Always prepared, florist sees last minute rush for flowers on Valentine's Day - KATC Lafayette News

Americans are expected to spend $2 billion on flowers and one of Lafayette’s most popular florists shows that the expectation is likely true. Thursday morning, colorful bunches of roses were flying off the shelves at Mary’s Flowers and Gifts in Lafayette. “Instead of ordering just a whole completely dozen of roses, I’ve seen more of them with mixed flowers, mixed colored arrangements, which was beautiful,” says florist Mary Andrus. At around nine, the shop was almost out of flowers to sell. Andrus says she has seen more last-minute buyers than ever but just because shoppers are late, doesn’t mean Mary is. She has prepared for this day for months. “We started making our bows for valentines in December and started to place our orders for flowers in January and when it came to February all we did was bought our vases and supplies,” Andrus said. Even though the work should be done at the end of Valentine’s Day, Mary said she’s ready to fill even more orders in the day to come. “We still will be delivering flowers over the weekends because guys that’s husbands a...

October Nature Walk: Celebrate fog, flowers and fall on the Shanahan Ridge Loop

Easy to moderate, depending on which loop you hike Access: Park along Lehigh Drive and look for the trailhead near the intersection of Lehigh and Lafayette Street on the west side of Lehigh. A second access point is at the southwest end of Hardscrabble Lane just west of Lehigh. After a week of mist and rain, the sun came out, and dissipating fog wrapped tendrils of white around the Flatirons. White-crowned sparrows, a Steller's jay and a spotted towhee splashed in a natural bird bath eroded into a boulder at the edge of the Shanahan Ridge Loop in Boulder Mountain Park. Energized by the joyous birds, we headed up to the ponderosa forest, looking for fall color. We found golden and white asters, red rose hips, blue chicory, bright yellow dogbanes, gumweeds, cottonwoods, and hackberry trees, and multi-hued poison ivy. It looked like an interior designer had coordinated the rosy sandstone boulders, the fading magenta liatris flowers and the burgundy-tinted big bluestem grasses. Advertisement At this time of year most birds are quiet except for nasal nuthatches, a few chickadees, and one-note Townsend's solitaires. Two silent hermit thrushes (usually a mountain species) perched in a hackberry tree, probably feasting on the contents of psyllid galls in preparation for migration. A family of eastern bluebirds flitted about the meadow, staking their claim to grub. Early morning fog lifts from Devil's Thumb as viewed from the Shanahan Ridge Trail.
