CAROLINE CAMERON: What to buy the gardeners in your life
A quick google for Nova Scotia seeds also showed Halifax Seed Company, Annapolis Seeds and the Incredible Seed Company. Speaking of Googling, you can always google ‘gifts for gardeners’ and find lots of ideas there.Other useful gifts? I am always wearing out gardening gloves - the thin ones with a rubber grip work best for me, and I can’t get enough good socks (wool or smartwool), since gardening is hard on them. Gardening knee pads have been a godsend to me, and I love to have a few big baskets for harvest, beautiful flower pots for the doorstep, and of course, a really good wheel barrow is an essential. If you’re shopping for children, it’s great to give gifts like seed kits, gardening tools or books on growing, because they encourage a hobby that promotes exercise and healthy eating.A gift certificate for a garden designer/consultant, or garden helper is good for winter planning and spring cleanup, or to help with a specific project. My favourite idea was shared with me by a friend - she gets a load of manure from her husband every year. There’s a few ways you could interpret that, but don’t worry - the serious gardener knows that it’s worth its weight in gold!Caroline Cameron lives in Strathlorne, Inverness County. She offers gardening and guiding services around Cape Breton Island. She welcomes your gardening comments and questions at firstname.lastname@example.org and on Facebook at Nature/Nurture Gardening & Hiking. (Cape Breton Post)Oct 19, 2017
Flower Thief Gets 10-Year Prison Term
ANNAPOLIS, MD — A Glen Burnie man will pay a high price for trying to steal some flowers. Khayyan Bryan Jones, 27, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for the robbery last year of an Annapolis flower stand, according to Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Wes Adams. On Sept. 14, 2016, Jones tried to steal some blooms from a stand near West Street and Church Circle. When the stand's owner confronted him, Jones punched the victim in the face and flipped over his flower table, damaging $100 worth of flowers, the State's Attorney's Office said in a statement. Jones pleaded guilty to the robbery on July 13. The 10-year sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Mark W. Crooks."Khayyan Jones attempted to rob the victim of not just his possessions, but his livelihood," Adams said in a statement. "This flower stand is a staple of the Annapolis community, and I am proud to serve justice on behalf of its owner."Image: Shutterstock

Authentic gardens require long-term devotion
One of the best examples of this I know is the Annapolis, Maryland, home of Nancy and Pierre Moitrier.
Their ranch house sits on a flat, one-third-acre lot bounded on two sides by neighborhood roads. The property is lifted out of any ordinariness by the development of an encircling series of garden rooms, shaped, variously, by trees and shrubs, fences, the house itself and modest stone walls. These spaces vary in size and character while creating part of a cohesive whole.
The Moitriers are landscape professionals, designing, installing and maintaining gardens.Advertisement (Their firm is called Designs for Greener Gardens.) Clearly, the development of their garden, since 2002, is shaped by their skills and experience, but you don't have to be a pro to embrace their underlying idea that a garden evolves from its site; it's not imposed upon it.
I was last at the Moitriers' in 2009 when I was focused on two features driven by Pierre's sense of garden artistry (being French helps with the aestheticism). The first is a meticulously crafted treehouse, high in a sweet gum tree in the rear of the lot. With its wooden siding and cedar shake dormer roof, the folly in the sky has a fairy-tale quality about it. It is so handsomely detailed inside that once you are in it, you might forget you're sharing the space with a tree but for the presence of its old boughs.
The other great element is a decorative vegetable garden, 25 feet square, and framed in a high fence fashioned from harvested trunks and branches of Eastern red cedar. None of it is milled to have edges, and Pierre put it together as a puzzle, a tracery of poles of sculptural and rustic enchantment. Deceptively, the garden fence consumed about 100 trees. (Cedars grow like weeds in woodlands, ditches and meadows, and he usually harvests them in advance of their planned destruction.)
Anyway, these two delights stood in the way of my soaking up the whole garden, a situation corrected with a recent return visit.

Pitts School Road gets back-to-school garden
The group submitted a grant application to the N.C. State Extensions’ Plants for Human Health Institute at the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis, and was selected for the project because of its comprehensive garden plan.“N.C. State sent out letters to all school administrators throughout Cabarrus County and if they wanted to be considered for this project they had to send in a plan. Pitts School Road had the best plan, the most comprehensive plan with long-term sustainability,” Billy Carol, store manager of the Lowe’s Home Improvement in Concord, said. “They had the best plan as to how teachers were going to use the classroom spaces.”So representatives from the institute and Lowe’s Heroes teamed up to make the garden a reality.Lowe’s Heroes is a company-wide volunteer initiative that offers Lowe’s employees the opportunity to work on a project in their own neighborhood, helping to make their communities better places to live, work and play.“Every store in our county is offered the opportunity to donate time and money, and help a local organization. This is the second year we’ve helped with a project like this,” Carol said. “We’ve got about 20 people out here today. We are partnering with N.C. State to come out and get this garden installed.”While Metrolina Greenhouses donated the flowers for the pollinator garden, Lowe’s donated almost everything else including wood for the planter boxes, PVC pipe, children’s gardening tools as well as a shed to store them.Lowe’s volunteers also built the weather station and elevated gardens so students can watch the roots of vegetables grow.“They are going to have a whole new space out here,” Carol said. But volunteers didn’t do all of the work. Teachers from Pitts School Road and other schools across the county helped to build the wooden beds and put them in pla... (Independent Tribune)
