Woodard's Mill Garden Club celebrates 25 years of flowers and friendship in Chesapeake

September through May.They alternate between day and evening meetings, taking advantage of various workshops and field trips, such as day trips to Williamsburg to view holiday decorations and learning to make wreaths and centerpieces at Johnson’s Nursery in Suffolk. They’ve learned how to make floral cake centerpieces and about the importance of bees from their resident beekeeper. The club works alongside the neighborhood civic league, with everyone encouraging each other while keeping a protective eye out for each other’s properties. It’s easy to see why they take an interest in neighbors, who are also close friends that work well together. As a group, the club has also supported Habitat for Humanity, enhancing the landscaping of its affordable homes. At their monthly meetings, members discuss what needs to be done in the neighborhood.“Our major project to date was raising funds to install the irrigation system at the Hillwell (Road) entrance to adequately water our annuals and perennials,” Donna Brown said. “That was accomplished in 2013 with money obtained through raffles, an auction and the generous donations of many neighbors.”The group is currently involved with another campaign to raise funds for an up-lighting system to enhance the front and back entrances of the neighborhood. When the group recently gathered at Brown’s home to celebrate its 25 years of working side by side as gardeners, decorators and neighborhood advocates, members came wearing a wide variety of colorful and eye catching hats. It was a fashion show of sorts, and sassy nicknames like Lime Sublime, All Eyes on Deck and Lily Pad Power were given to the hats, adding to the fun.Even Brown’s mailbox was festooned with a colorful cap.
