Old friends propose new take on Rockport neighborhood: Workforce housing, gardens, and lots of children

Rockport Village known as Hoboken. Where once was a schoolhouse (built just after the Civil War), which then became a garden center with greenhouses, may next be an agricultural enterprise and home to a farmer’s market. Next door? Perhaps a small workforce housing development, with walking trails and gardens, and a childcare center for infants and toddlers. And, if the community warms up, and a like-minded developer purchases the former Fuller Chevrolet dealership, and the town takes action with its former Rockport Elementary School parcel on West Street, the new landowners are even dreaming about connecting trails to the RES ballfields, as well as to the Harkness Preserve, which fronts the harbor, and backs up against the former car lot. The development is in the formative stages, but the principals involved are not rookies in moving Midcoast projects forward. And they are now talking to the Rockport Select Board about their plans. Martha White, Taylor Allen, and Marianne and Stuart Smith are old friends. They brought up their children in the same commun... (PenBayPilot.com)

Flowers by Hoboken finds a new home in Rockland

ROCKLAND — Hoboken Gardens, which for many years occupied its corner at 310 Commercial Street in Rockport, officially cut the ribbon at a new location at 15 Tillson Ave, in Rockland  Wednesday, October 26, under a new name: Flowers by Hoboken. On Saturday, October 29, Flowers by Hoboken will hold a grand opening and open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are inviting guests to view the new location. Lisa Farley, owner of Flowers by Hoboken, said Rockland offered many opportunities for store keepers, with an active downtown, a variety of events, and a monthly art walk. Farley said Flowers by Hoboken will offer many similar services to the Rockport operation, and will have new features, as well. "We're going to do flowers of course," she said. "We're going to do every day flowers and we do a lot of wedding work. We still have gifts and pool supplies. We carry gifts from Maine and we are trying to bring in gifts made locally and from around the state that are high quality. Something new will be the f... (PenBayPilot.com)

Chatham Author Ventresca's New Novel "Black Flowers, White Lies" Now Available

I pitched it as being like the movie Gaslight for teens." The setting for Black Flowers, White Lies is based on Hoboken, which is where Ventresca lived before she moved to Chatham. She enjoys writing for young adults, which is for 12-year-olds and up. "It's such a great age," she said. "They have a lot of potential, but there is a lot of uncertainty about what their future holds. So it's an interesting time to write about." Ventresca has a computer science background and she was a computer programmer until she transitioned into writing about technology. She laughs about how she wrote video copy for a VHS film on how to use the internet. After breaking in as a technology writer, she wrote a biography for teens on singer Avril Lavigne. But her real passion is fiction and now that she's written two books, she already has an idea for a third, which she started writing over the summer.   "It's tricky to write a thriller," Ventresca said. "You learn something from each book that you write. My next story is about a missing person. I just have a vivid imagination. It has to be something that is intrinsically interesting because you spend so much time researching it."  In addition to writing, Ventresca practices Isshinryu Karate, in which she has achieved the level of third-degree black belt. More information about Ventresca's books can be found at http://yvonneventresca.com/index.html ...
