Arlene's Flowers v. Washington - Cato Institute
Additionally, the Washington attorney general personally reached out to the couple. Both the couple and the state ended up suing Mrs. Stutzman for violating Washington’s antidiscrimination law.
The trial court ruled against Arlene’s Flowers and the state supreme court affirmed, holding that floral design did not constitute First Amendment-protected artistic expression. The U.S. Supreme Court remanded the case for reconsideration in the light of its 2018 ruling in a similar context (except a baker instead of a florist) in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission that state officials displayed anti-religious animus and thus could not enforce their law. In the absence of similar anti-religious red flags, it’s probably not surprising that the state supreme court reinstated its previous opinion almost verbatim.
Yet the U.S. Supreme Court precedent against compelled speech is strong. In West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943), the Court ruled that school children could not be forced salute the flag and recite the pledge of allegiance. And in Wooley v. Maynard (1977), the Court found that New Hampshire could not require drivers to display the state motto (“live free or die”) on their license plates. (That case is why, if your jurisdiction has a default slogan—for example, “taxation without representation” in D.C.—it has to offer you an alternative if you ask.) In a pair of 2018 cases, NIFLA v. Becerra, a... Oct 10, 2019

Flowers of the Sun - The Spokesman-Review
It looks a lot like a regular farm,” said Crystal Oliver co-owner of Washington’s Finest Cannabis, located just north of Spokane. “We have our grain silo on the parcel, and our little red barn on the parcel.”
When she’s not tending her cannabis crop, Oliver advocates at a legislative level as executive director of Washington Sungrowers Industry Association, which works to protect outdoor cultivators and the whole Washington cannabis industry.
Oliver and fellow sungrowers believe that the ability to grow outdoors symbolizes the end of cannabis prohibition. Black market days meant growing indoors to cultivate under lights, or the risking the dangers of guerrilla outdoor grow.
But today, state-licensed growers can plant in actual soil, under actual sun, on land they actually own. Growers believe this activity offers significant benefits to the entire industry.
Taking the fight outside
Ask most sungrowers, and they’ll tell you that no one grows quality cannabis and extraction biomass like they do.
“Sungrown cultivation is more sustainable,” Oliver said, comparing outdoor farming to indoor cultivation. “The only reason you have so many indoor growers is that people were forced to hide it from view. The sun works just fine for growing plants. It’s been working for ... Oct 10, 2019

Leaves are falling all around. Time you were on your way to a regional show garden - Tacoma News Tribune
Washington Park Arboretum – fall foliage, rare trees and miles of trails
There is more than football scoring field goals near Montlake in Seattle. To celebrate the change of seasons, especially before or after a UW football game, just tackle the spectacular gardens at the Washington Park Arboretum near the University of Washington.
This is a huge, free (except for the gated Japanese garden) and wonderfully serene green space that turns gold and bronze with changing leaf color in October.
There is a large visitors center and gift shop, so you can plan your walking, hiking or photography tours with an expert before you venture out on one of the many trails. With 230 acres, this arboretum can take an entire day to explore. It can also become just a spot to decompress after a visit to the city or when the Cougars beat the Huskies in football. (Oops, did I say that?)
For more detailed information visit the website at www.botanicgardens.uw.edu/washington-park-arboretum.
