'You come for the flowers': Long lines don't deter visitors from seeing Lake Elsinore poppies - The Desert Sun

Foz Saeed, 46, of San Diego toured the poppies with two other friends and said she saw people taking off their bags and jackets and placing them on the flowers. "This is a gift. We have to be respectful of it," Saeed said. MORE: Here's a guide to California's wildflower super bloom It's illegal to pick poppies that grow on state- or federal-owned land. The Lake Elsinore poppies are spread out on property that has a "hodgepodge of ownership," which makes it difficult to enforce rules, Reichardt said. Landowners include the Bureau of Land Management, Southern California Edison and Riverside County. Visitors have tried to help by advising others not to damage any poppies and Riverside County officials are sharing that sentiment. "Staying on the well-established trail keeps people in a better, safe area," Reichardt said. Shuttles are only necessary on weekends to avoid congestion when large crowds show up. Broader access should be available on weekdays, although officials will continue to monitor traffic. Shuttles are available 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. It wasn't unusual to see long lines of people waiting for their rides. Flower Fields set to bloom big-time March 1 - Escondido Grapevine

Rains that have pummeled San Diego County could mean large and beautiful wildflower blooms a bit ahead of schedule in Carlsbad and Anza Borrego this year. As storm systems have moved through the region this winter, rainfall showering Carlsbad Flower Fields and Anza Borrego has prepped soil for large wildflower blooms, according to officials from both areas. Steady rainfall has already helped a few flowers bloom in Carlsbad, according to Fred Clarke, with the Flower Fields. “The rains have been perfect for us. They have been overall gentle and steady which is ideal for germination and growing of the Ranunculus plants,” Clarke said. “We are seeing the plants develop a bit faster with a few lonely flowers being spotted in the fields of green already. It is looking like a spectacular year is in store for The Flowers Fields, good germination make for a spectacular bloom.” The Flower Fields feature what is called the Tecolote® Giant Ranunculus, which is one of the finest strains of ranunculus plants in the world. The ranunculus flower is native to Asia Minor and is a member of the buttercup family. This unique blossom also is known as a Persian Buttercup or Ranunculus Asiatic. A portion of the flower crop is sold as cut flowers. The rem...

How to See California's Super Bloom - Condé Nast Traveler

ParkFields of wildflowers have started to bloom in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the largest state park in California (about 90 miles northeast of San Diego). The California Department of Parks and Recreation recommends the following locations for spotting different species of blooms (updated March 12, 2019):For purple sand verbena: Drive east on Highway S-22, then park in the large pullout between mile markers 30 and 31.For desert sunflower, brown-eyed primrose, desert lilies, and lupine: Drive east on Highway S-22, park by mile marker 35, and walk into Arroyo Salado, Coachwhip Canyon, or Ella Wash. (Flowers are currently nearing their peak.)For yellow poppies: Visit the "Texas Dip" on Borrego Springs Road just north of Highway 78, or the Cactus Loop Trail across from the Tamarisk Grove campground. For yellow desert dandelions: Drive north on DiGiorgio Road in Borrego Springs. For pretty much everything: Head to the popular wildflower field along Henderson Canyon Road, between DiGiorgio Road and S-22.Many of the above sites are just seeing the beginning stages of a super bloom, so as long as weather conditions remain steady, we could potentially see peak blooms last through late March or into early April.Diamond Valley LakeDiamond Valley Lake's wildflower trail opened on March 9 in the southwest Riverside County reserve, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Golden poppies have just started to spring up in the fields around the reservoir, but peak bloom isn't expected until mid-March. The trail is open Wednesdays through Sundays; entry fees are $10 to park and $3/person to hike.Since we live in a selfie-taking world, it's worth noting that visitors should avoid wandering off the designated walking trails at any of the above sites. While it might be tempting to lay down in the flowers or nab that perfectly pensive pose, you'd only be trampling the flowers and worsening the conditions for any future super blooms. Now go forth and make Mother Nature proud.

San Diego Company Plants Energy 'Flowers' to Power Communities - NBC 7 San Diego

A San Diego company has found a way to harness the power of the sun and the wind on the small scale to provide energy to schools, parks and, in some cases, entire communities. Miramar-based Primo Wind's EnergiPlant is a miniature solar wind turbine that can be installed virtually anywhere. "This is a system that can provide usable electricity without digging any trenches or connecting to grid power for small power items," said Primo Wind Director of Operations Hayden Van Zanten. The EnergiPlant looks like a large flower. The "leaves" collect solar power and a the wind turbine "bloom" captures energy day and night.Inside a bench at the base of the EnergiPlant is a bank of batteries where locals can plug in and charge electronic devices. An EnergiPlant is installed outside the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, as an example of functional art. Another is powering an "Earth Bench" created by students at Mater Dei Catholic High School in Chula Vista. The technolo...
