Mansfield wins America in Bloom award

Other communities in the 25,000 to 75,000 population category included Athens,Ohio; Decatur, Illinois; and West Chicago, Illinois. Each participant received a detailed written evaluation that can be used as a guide for future improvements, according to the press release. Mansfield's evaluation was 29 pages long. Its ratings included a 91.67 percent for its flowers, 80.56 percent for its landscaped areas, 75 percent for its urban forestry, 55.88 percent for its environmental efforts, 77.27 percent for its celebrating heritage, 78.57 percent for its community vitality and 55.68 percent for its overall impression. The evaluation noted Mansfield's 750 volunteers, 14,646 volunteer hours, 33 participating groups, 22 tree plantings and thousands of flowers planted. "The community has risen above challenges of economic hardship and rallied residents to support beautification and historic preservation efforts," the judges wrote in the evaluation. "In your renaissance, you have begun the arduous process of expanding your community from being a center of manufacturing to a destination for visitors and locals alike." This was Mansfield's second year in the America in Bloom program. Last year, it earned three out of five "blooms," a rating system that was change to stars this year. More than 250 communities from 45 states have participated in the program, according to the press release. "America in Bloom is helping towns and cities of all sizes achieve their potential," America in Bloom executive director Laura Kunkle said in the press release. "Every year, our participants raise the bar, and the accomplishments and progress shown by this year's group is again remarkable. Daffodil supplants iris as Athens official flower

Athens-Clarke County officials recently gave the daffodil its day in the sun.Last month, with unanimous approval, county commissioners named the daffodil Athens' official flower, replacing the iris.Already the daffodil has become a staple on the interchanges along the GA-Loop 10. Local nonprofit, Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful, said they’ve planted more than 100,000 daffodils in the last 10 years.The yellow perennial has found a home at on and off ramps at Chase Street, Prince Avenue, Atlanta Highway, Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and North Avenue.The nonprofit’s mayoral appointee, District 4 Commissioner Allison Wright, proposed the resolution to change the flower. Athens garden club celebrates 80th anniversary

Staff Reports The Rose and Dahlia Garden Club recently celebrated its 80th anniversary during a gathering at the Athens Country Club.The club has a long history of providing beautification projects and environmental programs in the Athens area.Special guests included Garden Club Council of Athens President Sally Allen and Azalea District of Georgia Club District Director Molly Kimler.The clubs officers attending were Diane Moore, Ina Hopkins, Louise Brockington and Connie McMillan.The club was organized in 1938 by 12 men and women, who were devoted to the cultivation of dahlias and roses, according to club history.As the 1950s approached, the club focused on flower arrangements, preserving flowers and controlling garden pests. The 1970s brought an increased awareness of conservation and ecology, and by the 1990s, the club expanded its focus on birds, orchids, water gardens and other environmental issues.The club has landscaped the YWCO, the Loran Smith Healing Garden, a butterfly garden at Timothy Road Elementary School and this year a duplex in Habitat for Humanity’s Neighborhood Revitalization ...
